The grid system is an essential tool for designers. Used as a way to organize and connect all of the information being presented to the viewer, grids have constantly been manipulated, re-arranged, and improved over time. Successful grids not only provide order and clarity to a composition, but they hold the ability to aid designers in controlling a page's viewing sequence.
While a grid may seem like a set of rules never allowed to be broken, designers also have the option of breaking a grid system to improve the composition or spark the viewer's interest. However, these alterations would not be successful were it not for the viewer's natural draw to clear order and coherent structure.
